Laughing Goats…

Hi Scrapbook and Stationery Friend,
Kathy and I took our two oldest granddaughters, 10 and 7, to the Elbert County Fair here in Colorado this last weekend. As you can see to our left, everyone was having so much fun… even the Goats were laughing!
This one loved the girls and was making all kinds of faces and noises at them.

Not only did we get to see and interact with lots of different animals, we had a great time watching the two rodeo’s that day. Yes, there were two different rodeo’s on the same day!
They had a regular rodeo that most everyone is used to seeing with roping, riding and barrel racing such as in the image to the right we took of the Rodeo Queen’s division of barrel racing.

The second rodeo was a “Ranch Rodeo”. It has events that are in line with what they really do on a working ranch. Events such as culling cattle, team roping and branding with a paint marker (that’s just one event.) Here’s an image of one of the teams culling (separating) one of the numbered cows. As a team of 4 riders approaches the heard of about 18 numbered cows, the anouncer calls out one of the numbers and the team must then seperate that one cow from the rest of the heard.
Next, they must get it across the line (where the flagman is at on the fence), rope it by the head and rear feet (just like in team roping in a standard rodeo) and finally mark the cows rear end with a paint marker to simulate branding the animal. All this while keeping the cow from rejoining the
heard. If it gets back into the heard… it’s a no time.
They also had an event that was almost the same, but instead of roping both ends, they can only rope the head and then must brand (with a paint marker) the cow by getting off the horse and holding it steady by hand.
We enjoyed the “Ranch Rodeo” just as much or even more than the regular one. It was amazing how often the cows won! It’s tough with only 4 riders and such a large arena to keep the determined cow from getting back into the heard. The teams that did succeed were very skilled and no one had times under two minutes.
So, if you haven’t been to your local fair lately, you’re in for guite a treat and a really good time when you go. We sure had a great day!
